Some Notable Achievements of Prince Abubakar Audu in Kogi State
The Achievements of Prince Abubakar Audu has earned him a reputation amongst many Indigenes as the best governor since the creation of Kogi state.
He was named the best governor in the period of 1999-2003, despite being a governor on the platform of the opposition, the ANPP.
Audu was a Nigerian career banker and politician who was the first civilian governor of Kogi State.
His connection with the international community saved Nigeria during the harsh days of Shonekan administration from economic embargo.
He initiated the establishment of Obajana Cement Factory.
Audu established the first state owned University, Kogi State University, Anyigba. Which was later named after him.
He transformed Lokoja township by building the first double lane road.
He installed street lights, aesthetic roundabouts, and also carried out construction of inter-township and rural roads in Kogi state.
He did over 75 electrification schemes and 50 water projects during his time.
Established a television station, radio station and a state newspaper (The Graphic).
He Founded the first State owned Polytechnic in Kogi, (Kogi State Polytechnic).
He also pioneered the construction of the first ultra modern state liaison office in Abuja.
His administration also built an ultra modern stadium and a five star hotel in Lokoja, the Confluence Beach Hotel
He built the famous 200 units housing estates.
In the health sector, he established a specialist eye hospital and 25 other medical institutions.
Audu initiated 350 borehole schemes and constructed 300 kilometers of township roads.
Among his major achievements during his brief first term of office include the establishment of three different housing schemes for public officers consisting of over 1,500 housing units in Lokoja.
He enjoyed a relationship with the former British Prime Minister, John Major.
In 1993, Prince Abubakar Audu and the member of his family were special guests of the British Prime Minister at No. 10 Downing Street where the Prime minister hosted them to a state banquet.
