Obi was born on July 19, 1961 in Onitsha, a commercial city in Anambra State, Nigeria. Obi ran for and won the position of governor of Anambra State in 2002 after becoming convinced that things might be improved for the people in his native state. But after his main rival was wrongfully declared the winner and sworn in as governor, it took three years of legal battle for him to be certified the victor. When he assumed office in March 2006, he started putting his Anambra States Integrated Development Strategy (ANIDS) into action. This was a localized version of the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), designed to address a variety of pressing socioeconomic concerns like hunger, poverty, and child mortality.

Although he was the only governor in the country who belonged to a different party, he was elected as the Vice-Chairman, Nigeria Governors’ Forum (2008-2014), and Chairman, South-East Governors’ Forum (2006-2014), as has been recurring in his life journey, where both peers and the public place great trust in his abilities to serve diligently.
