Onoja Oboni – The Giant Born With Six Fingers and Six Toes
Onoja Oboni, the giant, was born with six fingers and toes.
He founded many of the Igala-speaking communities in Igbo Land, among them the OGURUGU community in Enugu State.
His birth was prophesied.
One whose birth was known to be mighty and mysterious before he was born was the fearless child born of the royal family in Ofu, present-day Kogi.
He was a great hunter in Ofu until he left. Onoja Oboni left Ofu after killing an ancestral snake that belonged to the people of the land. This said snake killed his mother, and in turn, he killed the snake, and that was a big taboo. He left Igala Land and fled towards the east.
He formed many of the Igala-speaking communities in Igbo Land, among which is the OGURUGU community in Enugu State.
He single-handedly built the great OGURUGU wall, dug his grave, and buried himself in OGURUGU.
To date, the grave is still in Ogurugu, and the people celebrate.
In Igala land today, any child born of six fingers is called Oboni.
