What is NIN?

NIN stands for National Identification Number. It is a unique identification number that is issued to citizens and legal residents of Nigeria by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). The NIN is a 11-digit number that serves as a means of identifying individuals and verifying their identity.

The NIN was introduced in Nigeria as part of the country’s effort to create a reliable and secure national identification system. The NIMC is responsible for the registration and issuance of NINs to eligible citizens of Nigeria. The NIN is linked to the individual’s biometric data, such as their fingerprints and facial recognition, which are captured during the registration process.

The government has also made it mandatory for all SIM card owners to link their phone numbers with their NIN as part of efforts to improve security and curb criminal activities in the country.
