He hails from Ayetoro Gbede which is in Ijumu,a local government in Kogi State.
In the year 2015, he joined the People’s Democratic Party where he contested for a seat in the House of Representative and won, representing Kabba/Ijumu federal constituency. During the 2015 senatorial election, he got elected as a member of the senate, representing his people in Kogi West.
While in the house, he seconded that Dr. Bukola Saraki should get a nomination as the distinguished president of the senate house, his nomination was supported by Ahmad Sani Yerima.
On the 23 of February 2019, he got re-elected to return to the senate house where he continued as a senator and a member of the 9th senate.
His opponent during the election, senator Smart Adeyemi, a notable member of the APC, headed to the tribunal, telling the court to abrogate the election because there were cases of election fraud.
The election was later annulled on the 23 of August 2019 and a re-run election was conducted. Despite the numerous contentions of Dino with both the federal and state government, his senatorial seat could not be retained. The Independent National Electoral Commission was then given an order to conduct another re-run election.
INEC decided that another date should be fixed for re-run election, as the governorship election had already been fixed to be conducted on the 16th of November 2019, but Dino urged INEC to conduct the election on the same day with the governorship election. He claimed that Yahaya Bello wants to rig the election for his anointed candidate, Smart Adeyemi.
Senator Smart Adeyemi defeated Dino Melaye, his opponent, with a margin of 20,000 votes, but the election was later declared inconclusive by the electoral body due to several cases of violence and electoral malpractices in more than 50 polling units within the senatorial districts. Another make-up election was slated for 30th November, 2019, although there were rumors that Dino had planned to boycott the election venue, but was seen in his polling unit voting.
There wasn’t a massive turnout from the electorates during the supplementary election because people were scared of being intimidated, wounded or killed by the fierce-looking thugs during the main election. Dino was still defeated, as he maintained a wide margin.
Although there were speculations that the election result was altered by the state government so as to favor Smart Adeyemi, taking the position of Dino in the senate house.
